Barry got suspended from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually got a job at a local paint manufacturer. For the last six-and-a-half years he has earned a reputation as a hard-working individual who seldom takes off from work due to illness.
Approximately eight months ago he began dating a woman named Carol. They seemed to get along real well immediately and looked as if they had a lot of fun together.
When Barry met Carol, he almost never drank. This circumstance totally changed when Barry and Carol started dating on a fairly normal basis. In point of fact, everything was going fine until Carol out of the blue called Barry one night approximately 4 AM and told him that she had to breakup and that she couldn't tell him what was going on at that time.
The next morning before he went to work, Barry drove to Carol's apartment and immediately discovered that she had already moved out. Barry took this particularly hard. If truth be told, he was stunned because they seemed to be getting along so well.
So what did Barry do about Carol's departure? Instead of working through his suffering and pain, he began getting inebriated nearly every night. It didn't take very long for his fellow employees and for his supervisor to see that Barry was coming to work late at least three times per week and that he routinely called off sick. Not only this but some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in the HR Department and stated that Barry time after time came to work with a strong smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.
Barry's manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Barry's fellow employees. So one Tuesday morning he asked Barry to come into his office. He mentioned to Barry that he had recently noticed a definite change in his attendance, work performance, sick time, and in his behavior.
"Barry, I'm not an authority about alcohol facts and I'm not particularly well-educated about alcoholism facts, but I have seen many of my friends and relatives experience some really destructive issues due to their irresponsible and hazardous drinking. My recommendation is that you learn more facts about alcohol and what alcohol dependency and alcohol abuse can do to a person."
"Why is this important? When people involve themselves in irresponsible and abusive drinking, their drinking issues not only adversely affect the alcohol abuser, but they also make a negative impact on her or his co-workers, family, friends, neighbors, and relatives. Barry, in short, I want you to get some help for your abusive and excessive drinking from our employee's assistance program."
Barry respected his supervisor quite a lot and as a consequence followed through with his suggestion the next work day when he called and made an appointment with a healthcare professional in the employee's assistance program. Although Barry didn't necessarily feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Carol, he felt some comfort knowing that his manager and his co-workers wanted what's best for him and cared about him. This gave Barry some psychological relief for the first time in several weeks and he actually experienced some hope that he would get back on track with his life.
