Miss Jackson was a health teacher at the most under financed private high school in the county. Even though she had been teaching for only three years, she had already secured a reputation as a person with a teaching approach that motivated and stimulated her students to learn and to think.
For instance, one Monday afternoon at 1:00 she addressed the students in her class and stated the following: "For the next three or four days we are going to learn about some basic alcoholism signs from a more wide-ranging viewpoint and we are also going to learn about some of the most typical signs of alcoholism from a more specific point of view."
"Not all of these alcoholism warning signs will beyond doubt establish that an individual with a drinking problem is a person who is addicted to alcohol, but the more signs that a person displays, the stronger the probability that she or he is a person who is addicted to alcohol."
Miss Jackson then told the the students that each person would be held responsible for researching two alcohol dependence signs and then presenting his or her findings to the other class members via a five minute oral presentation.
The day after all of the pupils completed their presentations, Miss Jackson passed out a sheet of paper with a list of all the alcohol dependency signs that were discussed and presented in class and in the presentations. Miss Jackson then asked the students in her classroom to study the list and rank the top nine alcoholism signs that were most indicative of alcoholism. After around ten minutes, Miss Jackson collected the pieces of paper and told her students that after she studies the results, she will reveal her findings the next school day.
Miss Jackson told the students in her classroom to look over the information on the sheet of paper she passed out and then to raise their hand if they had any questions, issues, or concerns. Within a minute or two, just about everyone in the classroom raised his or her hand. It was apparent that the pupils had some questions, issues, or concerns about their results versus the answers given by the alcoholism specialists. For instance, almost every person in the class disagreed with the highest ranking answer given by the alcoholism professionals, that is, "Do you feel extremely nauseous when you quit drinking?"
Miss Jackson then informed the students in her class why this answer was the most clear-cut indicator of alcoholism. She highlighted the fact that the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism is the physical dependency that is experienced with alcoholism and not with alcohol abuse.
Primarily this means that when a person who is addicted to alcohol suddenly stops drinking, he or she will suffer through alcohol withdrawal symptoms. After Miss Jackson explained the importance of alcohol withdrawal symptoms in the life of the alcohol addicted individual, the students started to recognize the basic difference between alcohol abuse and alcoholism.
A few minutes later the bell rang, signifying the end of the class. Based on the enthusiasm manifested by the students when they were leaving the classroom, Miss Jackson recognized that she had encouraged and motivated the pupils in her classroom to stop and think about a significant health issue and social problem that exists in our culture.
