Mitchell is a nineteen-year-old teenager who has finally determined that he needs to go and see his family doctor about his drinking behavior. At first, Mitchell thought he would be able to basically go online, look for some straightforward alcohol info and decide whether or not he was an alcoholic.
Not unexpectedly, he found numerous websites and blogs that listed some of the general alcohol consumption problems. That's the good news. The less positive news, sadly, was that Mitchell presented a host of these problems.
For instance, Mitchell has been drinking quite a bit more than usual and he has started to have more heated disagreements with the young lady he has been dating. In the same way, for the very first time in his life he has been experiencing sleeping problems. If this wasn't enough, Mitchell time and again has felt depressed and on an increasing basis he has been demonstrating limited attentiveness in class.
So Mitchell decided to call his family doctor and make an appointment. When Mitchell arrived at the doctor's office, he plainly told the healthcare practitioner about the consternation he feels about his excessive drinking behavior.
The family doctor told Mitchell that it was intelligent of him to address his problem drinking, he gave Mitchell a complete physical evaluation, and suggested that he talk to his parents about enrolling in an out-patient alcohol treatment program that was managed by Doctor Berger, one of his doctor co-workers who is an alcohol and drug abuse specialist.
In the same way, when Mitchell expressed the fact that he has been feeling depressed to an increasing extent, the family doctor told Mitchell that alcoholism and depression often come about in the same individual. Hence, the healthcare professional also recommended that Mitchell talk to his parents about seeking counseling to address his sense of gloom. In fact, Mitchell would be able to go to the local counseling center and schedule an appointment with Doctor Vedda, a well known psychologist who specializes in treating teenagers.
The doctor made it a point to tell Mitchell that he might not necessarily be addicted to alcohol, but that he was obviously drinking in a careless manner. Stated more explicitly, Mitchell was engaging in teen alcohol abuse.
The family doctor then told Mitchell that the reason he suggested alcohol treatment in the first place was because he wanted him to sort out his drinking problems, make sure that he prevented them from going downhill further, and start to live in a more healthy manner, even if it meant that he had to totally quit drinking. In brief, by successfully treating his alcohol drinking problems, Mitchell would be able to get his problem drinking under control and abstain from the negative series of events that could doubtless lead to alcohol dependency.
Mitchell clearly did not look forward to facing his parents about his drinking problems and his depression. And he surely did not want to face the thought of enrolling in an alcohol rehabilitation program. And lastly, he was not euphoric about going to a therapist about his depression. Despite these apprehensions, nevertheless, Mitchell actually experienced some emotional relief for the first time in several weeks because he finally stopped making excuses for himself and finally made up his mind to do something positive about his excessive and abusive drinking.
