Stephen was a seventeen year old high school senior who was manifesting more than a few alcohol-related issues at school. Therefore, the principal informed him that he had to see Miss Pender, the school counselor, before he would be allowed to return to class.
Later that day when Stephen went home after school, he had to go over his school situation with his Mom and Dad. His Mom and Dad were "relatively old-style" and explained to Stephen that getting expelled from school was not a satisfactory educational option. They informed Stephen that failing to graduate from high school would more likely than not be like a lead weight around his ankles that could conceivably impede his educational achievement for the remainder of his life. Furthermore, Stephen's parents were extremely dissatisfied that he was drinking in the first place and drinking with his classmates in the second.
It was obvious that his Mom and Dad were absolutely in agreement with Stephen's principal and explained to Stephen that he had better make up his mind to see Miss Pender, the school therapist. After his chat with his Mother and Father, Stephen eventually agreed to see Miss Pender the next day. So Stephen called the school and made an appointment to see Miss Pender the next day during his fifth period class.
When Stephen arrived at his scheduled appointment with Miss Pender, she instantly looked at all of the alcohol-related difficulties Stephen had gotten into and asked him if he understood why his recent alcohol-related actions caused quite a bit of anxiety by the school administrators.
Quite frankly, Stephen wondered why the principal explained to him that he had to see a school counselor. As he stated to Miss Pender, why should he see a professional therapist about his drinking situation? In view of the fact that almost all of his classmates drink as much if not more than he does, essentially, drinking shouldn't be such a big issue. Stated more precisely, if nearly everyone is drinking, why is this such a major concern?
In a word, Stephen's involvement with teenage alcohol abuse was starting to short-circuit his ability to act like a responsible young man. As stated by Miss Pender, "Just because most of your peers drink wine, beer, wine coolers, or hard liquor does not mean that it's the appropriate behavior for you."
Luckily, Miss Pender was very well prepared for her conference with Stephen. She showed him research studies and reports she had underlined that listed diverse drinking facts and statistics that targeted most people in general. Then she showed Stephen quite a bit of data that applied principally to teenagers.
After Miss Pender presented the aforesaid teenage alcohol and teen alcohol abuse facts and statistics, it was apparent that what Miss Pender disclosed to Stephen was a real source of discovery for him. Why? Because for the first time in his young life, someone not only made the effort to articulate the long term and the short term results of alcohol abuse and alcohol addiction, but she also made the effort to authenticate what she was saying with alcohol abuse and alcoholism statistics and facts that related to people in general, and mainly to adolescents.
Undeniably, it was almost as if a light went on and Stephen instantaneously understood why he should not be engaging in excessive and hazardous drinking with or without his pals anymore. Stephen thanked Miss Pender for her concern and for the materials she discussed and then accepted her reinstatement into class.
