When I bought a used laptop off an online auction site, it didn't come with a
hard drive. In doing my search for a laptop HD, I learned how to get the hard drive through compact flash memory card.
I bought a bootable CF to 2" IDE Adapter. That adapter allows you to try a compact flash card as the primary disk drive.
The adapter connects on the 44-pin connector in most laptops. I've found that several notebook computer connectors have a pin hole in the centre blocked, making the adapter not fit. I imagine you could snip over pin or bend it back to the adapter and it have to fit, however I have not experimented with it myself.
You can boot on every operating system from the CF cards using this adapter. I recommend using Windows 98 as your operating system. Windows XP makes just too many read/write cycles that can reduce living span for the memory card. Windows XP requires no less than 3 GB to install. Windows 98 just
requires at least 256 MB to run.
It's achievable use Windows XP as your operating system. I would up grade to a microdrive. However keep in mind, installing Windows XP normal way, it will get stuck in a endless loop. There is a technique to get it to setup correctly, however , I've not figured it yet. I imagine it would require files transferred from your regular laptop hard drive.
The most effective advantages to implementing a CF card for a hard drive is that if your laptop gets dropped, the memory is more likely to survive the fall than the usual standard harddrive.

I use this adapter including a 2 GB card for my notebook. It works nicely along with Windows 98 and I have added a Wi-Fi card needed for World-wide-web access.
