When I was just a little boy I can fondly reminisce sitting on an antique barber chair at the local barber shop and observing my father getting a haircut and shave. It is not anything like what it is today. There was an art to it. The barber really cared about what he was doing and it was obvious that my father loved it. Not only that, but the barber shop was where men could socialize amongst themselves.

The haircuts were frequently so precise. My father would be sitting in one of the many used barber chairs while the barber would deliberately take his time to provide the perfect cut. Most men kept their hair short as that was the way back then. Following the hair cut was a shave. This was not a shave as we imagine today, with foam from a can and a plastic disposable razor. Instead, the lather was applied with a badger brush and a straight razor was implemented. It looks daunting, but it is the cleanest shave you can ever receive. After the shave was the hot towel that always felt so good.

The men would mostly banter about sports or politics, though the subject of women would come up a great deal. It was a time to be at ease and get to know everyone a little better. Now, when you get a haircut the chatter is kept to a minimum and you commonly try to get out as soon as you can.

As I walk by the local barber shop and make out the sign indicating barber chairs for sale, I question why this rite has mostly disappeared from our culture. Do people not appreciate a good hair cut and shave anymore? Have we all become so anti-social that spending an afternoon chatting with our friends and neighbors seems like a unpleasant task? While I am not one to be cynical and only wish for "how things were", I do wish that people will remember and think a lot of the way it was just a couple decades ago.
